Winter Trees
Snow and Trees with a bit of Fractalius.
Sometimes elements of a photo just seem to come together. I've seen these trees hundreds of times, but never quite like this before. The snow and the clearing skies in the background took something that was usually quite ordinary and transposed it into something amazing. Just add some HDR and Fractalius to the mix and you get something magical!

Well, if the riots in Kiev start to spread, we can always hideaway for a few days at a place a few minutes walk from this spot.
Luckily we put heat into the place a couple of years back. But I’d have to rely on a 3G internet connection. But hey, that’s better than nothing.

Autumn Dreamscape - A Before and After
A pond and path, seen at Holosiivs'kyi Park, Kiev.
How I did this.
Starting with a single photo, which you see below, I follow my "Break the Rules" HDR process to create an HDR using Photomatix. Just using this tutorial will take you 75% of the way to this final result. Yes, it is that powerful. Then I did a bit of cloning to remove those people in the background and that stump. After that, I send it off to onOne Perfect Effects for some final processing. This is what I did.
NOTE: Filters in different versions of Perfect Effects may have different names or different locations in the left menu.
Apply the radiance filter. Take it easy using this one, because it will often make the overall result darker. But it will add some punch to your colors when used judiciously.
Apply the Hollywood Glow filter. Again, take it easy. This glow effect will be similar to a soft focus effect and will take the sharpness off some of your edges.
Go the Adjustment Brush panel and select add color. Then take some of the colors that have already been highlight by the previous steps and pop them up just a bit more.
Apply these effects and return to Photoshop. As a final step, I applied Russell Brown's High Pass Detail action to sharpen the final photo. Flatten and save.
I believe I found this detailing action on the following page, though I can't swear to it.

The Cathedral of St. Pantaleon or St. Panteleimon is a large Eastern Orthodox cathedral in the Kievan neighbourhood of Feofania. It shares similarities with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Tallinn and is considered a high point in Russian Revival ecclesiastical architecture.

A bit more wrapping up the old year and getting on with the New Year!
Kiev Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, was established in the year 1051. Along with other religious sites in Kiev, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Photos of the Year 2013 - Secret Hideaway
About time to start wrapping up last year and get onto the New Year!
A nice hideout halfway between Kemer and Phaselis, Turkey.
This one was almost a lost shot. While adjusting some dials, I somehow upped the ISO to 1600, which isn’t a good idea for a daytime shot. I was able to recover it and then added a few painting effects to finish.
